6 Tips to Stay Healthy This Summer!

0

Summer is the season where there is an abundance of fresh seasonal produce and long warm evenings to enjoy BBQs and parties with friends.  Vacations, weddings, and other social events can throw your health goals off track. Using these simple tips, however, can help you stay healthy and enjoy all that the season has to offer!

1. Keep Hydrated!

drink water and hydrated

With summer temperatures, your hydration needs to increase.
Be intentional about drinking water.  The summer sun is draining. Carry a bottle with you. Adding mint, lime/lemon, or cucumber ramps up the flavor and health benefits.
Enjoy iced coffees and teas without added sugar.
Eat more fresh vegetables and fruit.  Many options such as cucumber, celery, watermelon, and strawberries are high in water content, which contributes to your hydration needs.
Going to a social event? Don’t arrive thirsty and use alcohol to quench your thirst.  Alcohol contributes to dehydration. Instead, plan to drink a glass of water first to help limit the amount of alcohol you consume. Consider alternating water with alcoholic drinks and pre-determining how many drinks you will consume to minimize the dehydration impact of the alcohol.

2. Eat balanced meals

that contain protein, fat, and high fiber carbohydrates. Balanced meals will keep your blood sugars stable, help keep cravings in check, and provide you with sustained energy through the day.
Load at least half your plate with veggies and the other half with protein.  Limit starchy salads such as potato or pasta.  Consider eliminating the bun and using a lettuce wrap for burgers.

3. Be mindful when you are eating.

If you’re at a party, put your food on a plate, so you can keep track of how much you are eating, rather than grazing from the food table all evening.

4. Make social connections the priority.

Enjoy the food, but use the time to make meaningful connections with your friends and family.

5. Plan ahead.

If you are having multiple social events on a weekend or on vacation, choose which days you will indulge and stay on track for the remainder of the days.

6. Take advantage of the long evenings and warm temperature.

Take a walk with family/friends after dinner. This will aid in digestion and reduce the blood sugar impact of your meal, with the added bonus of additional time connecting with those you love.

Adopting these simple tips will ensure you can enjoy the summer and the benefits of good health!
