Jessica Simpson “tipped the scales at 240” while carrying her daughter Birdie, born in March 2019, and was 100 pounds lighter by September 24 of that year. The numbers are hers, posted on Instagram that day with a winking emoji. Two and a half years later, under a bikini selfie, she added the line that turned a diet story into a career statistic: she had gained and lost 100 pounds three times.

I have no idea how much I weigh. I just want to feel good and be able to zip my pants up. If I don't, I have another size. I have every size.

Jessica Simpson on Today, 2021

Here is the sequence from her memoir Open Book, her interviews and her captions, dated, with the two places her own numbers disagree marked. The tabloids got the arithmetic wrong for twenty years. She mostly did not.

The journey

1997 to 2001Columbia Records, “you gotta lose 15 pounds”

The first number in the file is 118. That is what Simpson writes she weighed at 17, when she met Tommy Mottola at Columbia Records. He offered a contract and a condition. “You gotta lose 15 pounds,” she quotes him in Open Book, excerpted by People in January 2020. “That’s what it will take to be Jessica Simpson.” She “immediately went on an extremely strict diet, and started taking diet pills, which I would do for the next 20 years,” and was down to 103 by her second album in 2001. Every later headline about her body starts from a number a record executive picked for a teenager.

2005The Dukes of Hazzard, squats with her best friend

The shorts needed a body, and she built one. “I hired one of my best friends, Mike Alexander, who is a personal trainer,” she told CBS’s The Early Show in August 2005. “We immediately started training for 2 1/2 hours a day, six days a week. I was running all over the place and, you know, doing squats and lunges trying to get my bootie up.” The upkeep was its own job: “tanning beds, spray-tanning, and wearing body makeup,” she told Who What Wear in April 2026. “It was a whole thing to be Daisy Duke and look the same every day.” In the memoir that body is “a gold standard Jessica, the ‘before’ for every ‘Is she fat or is she thin?’ story for the rest of my career.” She never gave a weight for it; NBC’s 110 pounds, printed in 2009, is a reporter’s estimate and sits in Rumor / Reality below.

2009 to 2010the chili cook-off, a size 4 and “famous for gaining 10 pounds”

On January 25, 2009, she sang at a radio station’s chili cook-off at C.B. Smith Park in Florida in high-waisted jeans and a leopard double belt, and the photographs ran for a year. The jeans were a size 4, she told Oprah on March 3, 2010: “I don’t ever want to wear a size 0 and weigh 90 pounds.” Her verdict is still the best sentence written about the episode: “The fact that I was famous last year for gaining 10 pounds was ridiculous.” A decade on she told Hoda Kotb the picture was not the wound: “Not the picture necessarily, the captions. All the captions.” The journal entry People printed from the time begins, “Today my heart breaks because people say I’m fat.”

2012 to 2014Weight Watchers, 170 for Elle and a wedding dress

Maxwell was born in May 2012. Simpson had told USA Today she weighed 170 pounds when she posed pregnant for Elle’s April cover, and that September she became a Weight Watchers spokeswoman without naming a starting number: “There is a lot of pressure to lose weight, but I’m not a supermodel.” By November she was telling ABC that 60 pounds were gone, 10 short of her pre-baby weight. Then came Ace, born in 2013, and when ABC revisited the first loss in February 2014 the count had become 50, a gap nobody has explained. “I don’t think that I ever expected myself to see the numbers that I have seen on the scale,” she said. The July 2014 wedding was the stated incentive: “When you see my dress, you’ll know!”

2019Birdie, 240 or 260, and 100 pounds by September

The third pregnancy brought bronchitis, a breathing machine and the two heaviest numbers she has ever said. The Instagram post of September 24, 2019 says 240. In a Bloomberg Businessweek interview in early 2022 she described the hospital bed: “I was 260 pounds. She was a very big baby. We were like, ‘Just take her out.'” Both are hers; one may be the hospital’s number and the other the one she started counting from, and she has not said which. Her trainer Harley Pasternak told People that September that she walked and ate “three meals and two snacks a day”; he has also told the magazine he “never work[s] with scales.” Her own line, on HSN two days after the post: “that’s just the way God made me, very hungry and pregnant.”

@jessicasimpson 6 months. 100 pounds down (Yes, I tipped the scales at 240 😜)
My first trip away from #BIRDIEMAE and emotional for many reasons, but so proud to feel like myself again. Even when it felt impossible, I chose to work harder. 💚

2020 to 2021Open Book, tummy tucks, 14-year-old jeans and the scale in the trash

The memoir came out in February 2020. It records two tummy tucks in 2015, booked against a doctor’s warning about her liver, the second ending in an infection and nine secret days at Cedars, and the decision to stop drinking in November 2017. Asked by Glamour what the cook-off had cost her, she gave the answer that explains the next decade: “It ruined the stage for me, and the stage was my home.” On her 40th birthday, July 10, 2020, she posted a selfie in True Religion jeans she said she had kept for 14 years. By the spring of 2021 the scale was gone. “I had Eric walk it to the trash can,” she told ET, and on Today: “I have no idea how much I weigh. I just want to feel good and be able to zip my pants up. If I don’t, I have another size. I have every size.” For a woman whose chart begins with 118 and 103, not knowing the number is the most radical entry on it.

@jessicasimpson I have kept these throwback True Religion jeans in my closet for 14 yrs (I’m not exaggerating!). I figured that since I’m in the final hours of my 30’s I’d give them another try, and hello 40, so nice to meet you 🤸🏼‍♀️🙌🏼🥳

2022 to 2023“100lbs 3x,” and the Ozempic question

The bikini photo went up on April 7, 2022: “I have gained and lost 100lbs 3x so I never thought this moment could or would happen.” After a November 2022 Pottery Barn Kids video, commenters guessed at a prescription. She answered Bustle in July 2023: “Oh Lord. I mean, it is not [Ozempic]. It’s willpower. I’m like, do people want me to be drinking again? Because that’s when I was heavier. Or they want me to be having another baby? My body can’t do it.” That August she told Access Hollywood her children now watched the commentary: “Why don’t they just say you look pretty, Mommy?” The size-4 jeans and the too-thin video are thirteen years apart and the same complaint.

2024 to 2026Nashville, American Idol and 46 in a bikini

“I am more confident now after three kids than I was at 25,” she told People in April 2024. In January 2025 she announced she and Eric Johnson were living separately. Nashville Canyon, Part 1 came out on March 21, she sang on American Idol in May, her first television performance in 15 years, and Part 2 followed on September 5. For Ryan Murphy’s All’s Fair she sat eight hours in a makeup chair to play a botched-surgery client, casting only a woman at peace with her own face would take. She told Allure in December that journaling kept her “inner confidence.” The latest entry is a birthday selfie posted July 29, 2026, captioned “46” and “July 10/26.” No weight given, which has been the point since the scale left the house.

Where this leaves her

Her chart holds five numbers she said herself, 118, 103, 170, 240 and 260, plus a size 4 defended on Oprah’s couch and Hoda Kotb’s. The 60 after Maxwell and the 14,000 steps a day were hers too, given in passing to ABC and to Katie Couric; the 110 for Daisy Duke and ABC’s later 50 came from reporters, and she has let them stand. That is a stranger discipline than it sounds for someone who built a clothing line on being, in her phrase, every size. The woman told at 17 which weight would make her Jessica Simpson now declines to give her weight at all, and still cuts the jeans in every size, including the 4.

Rumor / Reality

The rumor

  • Birdie pregnancy weight: 240 (her Instagram, Sep 24, 2019) vs 260 (her Bloomberg Businessweek interview, early 2022, via ET). Both are her own figures; she has not said which moment each refers to.
  • Loss after Maxwell: 60 lb (ABC, Nov 2012, attributed to her) vs 50 lb (ABC/GMA, Feb 2014, the network's count). InStyle (Jan 2015) put the first-pregnancy gain at 70 lb; that figure is the magazine's.
  • 110 lb for The Dukes of Hazzard is NBC Washington's estimate (Jan 2009), not hers. The "120 pounds" for 2009 in People's 2025 roundup has no quoted source.
  • Height: NBC (2009) says 5-foot-3, CBS (2012) says 5-foot-4.
  • Daily steps: Pasternak to E! News (2020) said 6,000 rising to 14,000; ET said 12,000; she told Katie Couric 14,000 in 2012.
  • Cook-off location: Glamour's caption and Getty place it at CB Smith Park, Florida; Fox News and the TODAY segment said South Carolina.
  • Open Book publication date: Feb 4, 2020 (PopCulture, Fox) vs Feb 2 (Wikipedia). Bustle interview: published Jul 5 (Today) or Jul 6 (E!), 2023.
  • Pasternak's Sept 2019 repost says they had worked together "over 12 years"; People's roundup says a decade.
  • Allure's "every year" line (Dec 2025) is USA Today's paraphrase of her answer, not a full quote, and is not used in the text.
