Russell Crowe weighed 126 kilograms, or 277 pounds, the day Nuremberg wrapped. A year later, on Joe Rogan’s podcast on November 5, 2025, he said he was down to 100.9 kilograms, 222 pounds, and the number travelled around the world in a day. What travelled less well is how he got to 126 in the first place, because that was a job. Crowe has been putting weight on for directors since 2008 and talking about it with a mixture of candor and boredom ever since. Here is the sequence, in his words and the reporters’ numbers.

2008: Body of Lies, “bring on the burgers, baby”

Ridley Scott wanted the CIA man Ed Hoffman to look like someone who never left his desk, and Crowe obliged in the most literal way. He told Access Hollywood in September 2008 that he had bulked to 257 pounds for the part. “It just felt right for the character and it’s what Ridley wanted as well,” he said. “He wanted the image of Ed to feel like a retired football player whose knees didn’t allow him to train anymore.” The method was not complicated: “Bring on the burgers, baby!” And the theory, which he would repeat for years: “If you want to put on weight, you just elect to live a sedentary life style. Just as soon as you stop actually being active and decide to eat what ever you want, then these two things will combine very quickly.”

He put the gain at 63 pounds, a figure UPI ran on October 1, 2008, the week before the film opened. It was, by his own later admission, the easy direction. Getting back was not.

2019: Roger Ailes, 30 pounds and six pounds of silicone

By the time Showtime’s The Loudest Voice came around, he was mid-descent. “I was on my way back down,” he told Entertainment Weekly in 2019. “If I’m adjusting weight, I try not to do it suddenly. I’ve learned my lessons from the past. You go up gradually and you come down gradually. So, I was part way through that. I was, I don’t know, 30 pounds or something into that, and this came up and so I went back the other way.” The rest of Ailes was prosthetic: six pounds of silicone and latex on his face and a padded bodysuit, built by Adrien Morot, the designer who would later do The Whale. The Independent, looking back this summer, put Crowe’s own weight for the role at about 278 pounds.

It is also the interview where he announced he was done discussing any of this. “I’ve really stopped talking to people about preparation,” he said. “Because preparation becomes the article. It becomes what people talk about. And that’s really boring.” He then spent six years proving himself wrong, one podcast at a time.

2024 to 2025: Göring, and the 126-kilogram wrap

Nuremberg, James Vanderbilt’s drama about the psychiatrist who examined Hermann Göring, cast Crowe as the Reichsmarschall, and the Ailes weight stayed on for it. Filming ended in late 2024; the film premiered at Toronto on September 7, 2025, and opened in the United States on November 7. The 126-kilogram figure he gave Rogan is from that wrap day, which makes it the heaviest number he has ever attached to himself on the record.

2025: the year back down, by his account

The slimmer Crowe first turned up in public at the Golden Bee Awards in Malta in June 2025, then at Venice that September with Britney Theriot and his son Tennyson, and at the Zurich Film Festival, where he collected a lifetime achievement award. On Rogan he described the mechanics without a diet plan. The biggest change, he said, was treating the injuries that had kept him from training: injections and intravenous therapy for his knee and shoulder, arranged through a wellness company called Ways2Well. “It’s calmed down my body’s inflammation,” he said. “It’s taken a bunch of pain away, so I can go and work out and not have to suffer for two or three hours afterwards.”

The other change was alcohol, which he defended before admitting he had cut it. “I’m a big proponent for having a drink,” he told Rogan. “It’s my cultural heritage and as a working-class man, it’s my goddamn right, Joe. But as you get older, there are certain things you start to learn about your capacities.” His rule now: “one night a week, if I’m having fun, is plenty.” HELLO! added up the loss at 57 pounds over the year; Today, working from his own kilograms, made it 55. Either way he arrived at 222.

2026: Highlander, Venice and a birthday photo

The body he has now has a job waiting for it. Chad Stahelski’s Highlander, with Henry Cavill as Connor MacLeod and Crowe as the immortal swordsman Ramírez, began principal photography in Scotland on January 28, 2026, and moved to Poland in May. In July he posted a photo on X for his son Tennyson’s 20th birthday, the two of them flexing, which The Independent used as the peg to note that the 62-year-old had kept the weight off. In September he was back at Venice for the world premiere of What Love Builds, a screening he had invited his followers to on X in July.

Where this leaves him

Crowe’s weight chart is a series of professional decisions with long tails: up 63 for Scott, up again for Ailes, held for Göring, and then a year of medical appointments to undo what three directors asked for. He will tell you the preparation is boring. The numbers say it was the most expensive part of the work, paid in knees and shoulders rather than money, and the only reason he is swinging a sword for Stahelski at 62 is that he finally stopped treating his body as a costume.

Rumor / Reality

The rumor

  • The Body of Lies gain is reported as 63 lb (UPI, quoting Crowe) and 62 lb (Wikipedia); NPR's critic said 50.
  • The 278 lb Ailes figure comes from The Independent, not from Crowe himself, who gave only the "30 pounds" remark.
  • HELLO! counts the 2025 loss as 57 lb, Today as 55 lb; both work from the same kilograms.
