Most talk-show stories are built to be retold at dinner. Kim Kardashian brought two to Jimmy Kimmel, and only one of them would hold up in court. On the Thursday, October 15, episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, promoting Season 2 of All’s Fair, she explained why she has not danced since 2008 and how, as a teenager, she went through O.J. Simpson’s luggage. The second one is a chain-of-custody problem told as a funny teenage memory, and she seemed to enjoy telling it.

Eighteen years without a dance floor
Kardashian competed on Season 7 of Dancing With the Stars in 2008, partnered with Mark Ballas, and was eliminated after three weeks. Her memory of it, as quoted by Us Weekly and Parade from the episode, is not glamorous: “I would honestly cry in my trailer, like, every single night, praying to get kicked off. It was so hard for me.” The reason she gave was shyness. “I was so shy to do it, I couldn’t get over myself.”
She told Kimmel she has “never danced again” and that the show “traumatized me for life”. Eighteen years, not one dance, by her own account. I will note, with the precision my job demands, that she said she “can’t even watch it”, which is a different claim from never having seen it. She has. Kylie showed the footage at a family poker night, because “half the people there didn’t know that I did it.”
Her review of the evidence: “Thank God it’s like so old that it’s like pixelated.” Then she said something more generous about her younger self: “I remembered some of my moves, and I wished that I had the, like, confidence that I do now.”
The pitch: a Kardashian-Jenner season
Being Kardashian, she turned the trauma into a format. “Could you imagine if we did like a Kardashian-Jenner whole season of all of us, like, competing against each other on Dancing?” she said, adding that her sisters “all loved it.” Kimmel called it a “fantastic idea” and promised, “I’m going to make some calls.” She was less sure: “I don’t know if they would ever do that.”
For the record, nobody from ABC or the show has said anything about it. As of today it is a sentence on a late-night couch, which is where a surprising share of television begins and where most of it stays.

The Louis Vuitton bag in Khloé’s room
The second story is older and heavier. Her father, Robert Kardashian, was Simpson’s friend and part of his defense team after the June 1994 killings of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman. Kim was 13 that summer. “After it had all happened, O.J. came to stay with my dad at the house,” she said, as quoted by OK! “He had this Louis Vuitton luggage and brought it into the house.”
She decided, in her words, “I’m going to play investigator,” and opened it. The bag “was in [Khloé’s] room.” She closed it all up, went downstairs, and then saw a news report that the bag was being seized because someone thought something was in it. Her reaction, also quoted by Parade: “Oh my God, my fingerprints are all over it.” She did not say what she found, and the outlets that covered the interview do not report that she found anything.
Snooping in a houseguest’s suitcase at 13 is ordinary teenage behavior; the houseguest is what made it a story. What she did with the memory later is the more interesting part. She linked the moment to her interest in law, and to watching her father work the case from behind the scenes (“I just was so into it, and I saw everything from behind the scenes”). She went on to study through California’s law office apprenticeship program and passed the First-Year Law Students’ Examination in 2021.

And the show she came to sell
The reason she was on the couch at all is All’s Fair. Season 2 premieres on Hulu on Wednesday, November 4, with three episodes, and Kardashian is back as divorce lawyer Allura Grant, alongside Sarah Paulson, Glenn Close, Naomi Watts and Niecy Nash-Betts. Season 1 was punished by critics and watched anyway; we wrote earlier this month about the Elizabeth Taylor cape in the new trailer.
@kimkardashian Still thinking about that Season 2 trailer btw. 💅 #AllsFair returns November 4 on @hulu and with Hulu on Disney+.
It is a neat bit of casting that the woman who once worried about fingerprints on a suitcase now plays a lawyer on television. Whether the show is any good is a separate question. Hulu will give us three episodes to decide.

My take
Both stories are about the same girl: shy enough to cry in a trailer, curious enough to open a famous suitcase. Kardashian now tells them with the confidence she says she lacked in 2008, and she clearly enjoys the second one more than the first. As for that family dance season, I will believe it when ABC sends out a press release, and until then the 2008 footage can stay pixelated.
