Kim Kardashian’s All’s Fair Cape Is a Quote From Elizabeth Taylor

The Season 2 trailer puts Allura Grant in a scorpion-trimmed velvet hood. Elizabeth Taylor wore the original to Princess Grace's 40th birthday in 1969.

Some costumes are clothes, and some are footnotes you can wear. The black velvet hood in the new All’s Fair trailer is the second kind. Hulu released the Season 2 trailer on October 7, and within a day the fashion desks had found the reference: a scorpion-trimmed evening cape Elizabeth Taylor wore in Monte Carlo in 1969. I have stood behind enough beauty counters to hear women ask for “her lipstick, the one from that photo”, so I recognise the move. Kim Kardashian is not dressing a character here. She is quoting.

What the trailer shows

The trailer is a little over two minutes long and mostly about the firm. Hulu’s own summary says the lawyers of Grant, Ronson & Greene return “for another season of scandals, secrets, and stilettos”, with new alliances, tested friendships and a revelation that threatens the firm itself. Kardashian is back as divorce lawyer Allura Grant, alongside Glenn Close, Naomi Watts, Niecy Nash-Betts, Teyana Taylor and Sarah Paulson.

The look sits in the middle of all that. As People and Page Six describe it, Allura wears a black velvet hood with large rhinestone scorpions on the front, paired with a heavy diamond necklace. People also notes that Paulson’s character, Carrington Lane, appears in a version of the same cape, which suggests the costume department made more than one. Two women in the same statement piece is either a plot point or a very awkward office party. Possibly both, given the show.

The 1969 original, with receipts

Taylor wore her cape to Princess Grace of Monaco’s 40th birthday party in Monte Carlo in 1969. Grace was born in November, a Scorpio, and the party had a Scorpio theme, which explains the scorpions. The cape was by the Roman house Tiziani. Taylor wore it with the 69.42-carat Taylor-Burton diamond on a Cartier necklace, a gift from Richard Burton, because when you are Elizabeth Taylor the subtle option is not on the menu.

The cape itself has a paper trail. It went to Christie’s New York in December 2011 in The Collection of Elizabeth Taylor, catalogued as a Tiziani black velvet “Scorpio” evening cape from 1968-1969, with an estimate of $2,000-3,000. It sold for $60,000, or $74,500 with the buyer’s premium. Nobody has said whether Kardashian bought the original or the production built a copy, and I would not assume either. The trailer only proves that someone knew exactly which photo they were copying.

About those diamonds

Page Six reports that the jewelry is by Leviev: a Savona necklace it values at $1.55 million and Aveline drop earrings at $1.2 million, more than $2.7 million together. Those figures come from the outlet, not from Hulu or from Kardashian, so treat them as reported prices, not a receipt. My practical note: real stones on set are not unusual for a show like this, but neither are very good fakes, and under a black hood on a phone screen the camera cannot tell the difference. Neither can I.

@kimkardashian Still thinking about that Season 2 trailer btw. 💅 #AllsFair returns November 4 on @hulu and with Hulu on Disney+.

Why Kim keeps borrowing from Liz

This is not a one-off. Kardashian has put Taylor’s own diamond earrings on her Instagram after wearing them to a Balenciaga couture show, and in Season 1 her character is handed a ring described as Taylor’s. She also auctioned her Season 1 wardrobe and said in her Instagram caption that “100% of net sales will go directly to the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles (LAFLA).” Whatever you think of the show (the critics thought very little of Season 1), the wardrobe is clearly treated as part of the story, not set dressing.

There is a beauty lesson in it, too. Taylor’s 1969 look works because everything around the cape is simple: dark velvet, one enormous stone, a face framed and left alone. The trailer copies that restraint. The hood does the talking, so the makeup does not have to.

My take

A homage is only as good as its source, and Kardashian picked one of the best-documented nights in twentieth-century jewelry history. It will not rescue the reviews. But it is the most interesting two seconds of the trailer, and the one that sends people to look up a 1969 photo of a woman in a scorpion hood. That is what a good quote does: it makes you read the original.
