Most celebrity weight-loss stories end with a magazine cover and a single number. Billy Gardell’s story is still running: it has a punchline, a 2026 stand-up tour and a title that does half the work. The Mike & Molly and Bob Hearts Abishola star, 57, went from a peak of about 370 pounds to the low 200s after gastric bypass surgery in July 2021, and four years on he is still talking about it. My read: that is the point.

Where the 370 came from
Gardell has never pretended this was about a costume fitting. He weighed the most during the Mike & Molly years. In a December 2025 interview, Parade summed up what he told The Adam Carolla Show: he links the weight to abuse from two stepfathers. “When you do that, you have to protect yourself. And I didn’t do it in the gym — I just got big,” he said. And the line that stayed with me: “You’re wearing this protection for a beating that is no longer coming.”
It is the most honest explanation of comfort eating I have heard from a sitcom star. It also makes the old “how did he do it” headlines, ours included, look a little thin.

The bingo card that made him book the surgery
Gardell had Type 2 diabetes, and in the same Carolla interview he listed the rest: “I was overweight, Type 2 diabetes. I was a smoker. I had sleep apnea.” When the pandemic arrived and doctors read out the COVID risk factors, he told Entertainment Tonight in September 2022, “I had all of them except ‘over 65.’ I had a full bingo card.” He “finally went and I had bariatric weight loss surgery last July,” he said then, meaning July 2021. By that interview he was down to 212 pounds.
He also admitted he “chickened out from doing it like twice” first. I like that detail. It is the one part of the story every reader recognises, and the one that PR versions of these stories usually leave out.

Surgery was the tool, not the whole job
The old version of this article said he lost 30 pounds dieting and then “another 100” after surgery. Those figures were never his, so I have taken them out. Here is what he has said on the record. In April 2023 he told ET’s Kevin Frazier, “I float between 205 and 210,” and listed the health changes: his resting heart rate went from 113 to 68, and his Type 2 diabetes was gone. He also said he was still smoking and working on it, which I respect more than any before-and-after.
The mindset part he put plainly to ET in 2022: “food is fuel and it’s not comfort and it’s not celebration.” He told People: “Sometimes you need help, and you have to be humble enough to ask for it.”

The funniest casualty was the wardrobe department. “The true people that were tortured here was my wardrobe guy and my makeup people, because I kept getting smaller,” he told ET, talking about Bob Hearts Abishola. The CBS show ran five seasons, from 2019 to 2024, so a whole sitcom’s worth of costumes had to keep up with him.

Less Is More: the weight loss goes on tour
This is what is new since we first wrote about him. With Abishola finished, Gardell went back to stand-up with The Less Is More Tour, his first theater tour, which has been on the road through 2026. Local coverage from Rapid City in February and Warren, Pennsylvania in June describes the weight loss as a running theme of the set. Tour coverage now puts the total at 173 pounds. “I had to get healthy,” he told the Rapid City Post. To the Times Observer he called the surgery a source of freedom rather than a punishment: it lets him ride horses, surf and hike. “I’m grateful for every minute of it.”
The other running theme is home. He has been married to his wife, Patty, for 25 years, and their son is 22. Gardell has said his son was a big reason for the change: “I feel like I wasn’t a good example of health for him.”

What he said on camera
His early account, when the number on screen was still 130 pounds, is on The Rich Eisen Show. He talks about the pandemic and the decision with the same deadpan he brings to a Steelers loss.
My take
Gardell’s weight loss is not news anymore. The way he tells it is. He gave the surgery credit, gave the therapy-level reasons a name, and kept the cigarettes in the story. Then he turned all of it into stand-up material and called it Less Is More. Most stars stop at the part where they learned to love themselves. He found the reason he needed the armor, and then he took it off on stage, which takes more nerve than any diet.
