Traci Braxton weight loss: the truth about her final year

Traci Braxton weight loss: the truth about her final year Before / after

Some photos get read wrong the moment they land online, and Traci Braxton’s family wedding pictures are a textbook case. In early July 2021 she posted shots from her son’s wedding: a pastel blue gown, her husband, her son, a brand-new daughter-in-law. The internet skipped all of that and went straight to her waistline. Eight months later, on March 12, 2022, the family announced she had died at 50 after a private year of treatment for esophageal cancer.

This site first wrote about her in 2022 under a “weight loss” headline. That framing deserves a correction more than a refresh, so here is the story as the record actually supports it.

The wedding post that started the talk

The photos went up on her Instagram over the Fourth of July weekend in 2021. Fans noticed she looked much smaller than on Braxton Family Values, the comments filled with worry and guesses, and, per EURweb’s report at the time, she turned comments off. She never addressed the speculation publicly.

Here is my read, and I have been doing this long enough to be sure of it: turning comments off was not evasion. It was a mother choosing to keep her son’s wedding about her son’s wedding. The commenters had the whole internet; she wanted one afternoon.

What the family actually said

The only account of her illness that counts came from the family. Her husband, Kevin Surratt, said in a statement released through her spokesperson: “We have come to a time where we must inform the public that after a year of privately undergoing a series of treatment for Esophageal cancer our beloved Traci Braxton has gone on to glory.”

Toni Braxton posted the sisters’ statement: “Traci passed this morning as the snow was falling, our angel is now a snowflake.” Her son, Kevin Surratt Jr., wrote on Instagram: “She fought to the end and today she’s at peace.” Their mother, Evelyn Braxton, later wrote that her daughter “fought a good fight.”

Note what is not in any of those statements: a word about her weight. The family never linked the change in her appearance to the diagnosis, and neither will I. The timeline overlaps (a year of treatment before March 2022 puts the start around the wedding season), but overlap is a calendar fact, not a medical one.

Why “weight loss” was the wrong headline

Our 2022 version called her new look a transformation and closed with a lesson about health showing on the body. I would not publish that today. A woman going through cancer treatment in private is not a before-and-after, and her body was nobody’s homework assignment. The fans who guessed “she’s sick” were right about the fact and wrong about the method; guessing a diagnosis from a wedding photo is a habit worth retiring.

Earlier versions also quoted her on diabetes and hypertension. I could not find a primary source for those lines, so they are gone. A fact-check that keeps the unsourced bits is just a rumor with better formatting.

Who she was beyond the headline

Traci was one of the five Braxton sisters and, as the show liked to call her, the “wild card” of all seven seasons of WE tv’s Braxton Family Values. She released her solo debut, Crash & Burn, in 2014; its lead single, “Last Call,” reached the Adult R&B Top 20. A second album, On Earth, followed in 2018, the same year she acted in the film Sinners Wanted. She also worked in radio, which, in a family this loud, may be the only job where she was guaranteed the microphone.

The Braxtons, four years on

The sisters have marked each anniversary on Instagram; in March 2023 her sisters and their mother each posted their own tributes. This autumn brought another loss: Trina’s husband, Von Scales, died in Atlanta on October 1, 2026, at 58, a family representative confirmed. theGrio’s report on his death mentioned Traci a few lines down. That is how grief works in a family this close: every new loss reopens the old one.

Entertainment Tonight’s report from the week she died is still the clearest summary of how the family announced it:

So, back to that wedding photo. The internet saw a smaller woman and started guessing. I see a mother in pastel blue who made it to the day that mattered to her, and kept the rest to herself. That was her right, and four years later it still is.
