For twenty years the NBA has listed LeBron James at 250 pounds. For roughly the same twenty years, anyone with eyes has noticed that his body does not look the same from one season to the next. Both things are true, and neither is a scandal. This article explains what the official figure means, why it does not change, what has visibly changed, and where LeBron is in 2026, which is no longer Los Angeles.

The listed weight, and why it is frozen

When Cleveland drafted him first overall in 2003, LeBron was 18 years old, 6 ft 8 in and 240 pounds. By his Miami years the roster said 6 ft 9 in and 250 pounds, and it has said that ever since, through Cleveland again, eight seasons in Los Angeles and now Philadelphia. NBA heights and weights are self-reported at the start of a career and rarely revised for veterans. The number is a label, not a measurement, and the same is true for nearly every player over 30 in the league.

What actually changed

Young LeBron James with the Cleveland Cavaliers
LeBron as a Cavalier in the mid-2000s, closer to his listed 240.

Three visible phases show up in the photos. The rookie in Cleveland was long and lean. The Miami version, from 2010, added upper-body mass and became the physical template most people picture. The Lakers version, from 2018, is where the “is he heavier than listed” talk started: after a groin injury that cost him most of the 2018-19 season, he came back noticeably bulkier, and analysts guessed at 260 or more.

In Lakers purple. The 2018 to 2026 era produced the most speculation about his weight.

LeBron has said in interviews that he deliberately plays heavier in some seasons and cuts weight in offseasons to protect his joints, and he has talked about spending over a million dollars a year on his body. What he has never done is announce a number. The “280 pounds” figure that circulates comes from fans watching gym videos in 2022; it is a guess.

2025-26: the record, and the end in Los Angeles

The 2025-26 season was LeBron’s 23rd, a league record, and his eighth and last with the Lakers, who had drafted his son Bronny in 2024 so the two could share a court. He turned 41 in December 2025, still starting, still averaging numbers most 30-year-olds would take. The season also produced the loudest retirement speculation of his career.

July 2026: Philadelphia

LeBron in his forties. In 2026 he chose a fourth franchise over retirement.

On July 24, 2026, after what he said was serious thought about retiring, LeBron announced he would sign a two-year, $8 million contract with the Philadelphia 76ers, joining Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and Jaylen Brown. He called it his “last decision.” Philadelphia had not won a title in 43 years, and the parallel with his 2016 Cleveland championship was the point. He scored 10 points in his preseason debut in October 2026, at 41, in his 24th season.

Why the weight question keeps coming back

Partly because the official number is obviously stale, and partly because LeBron’s body is the most-watched in sports: every change in it gets read as a sign of decline or discipline. The sober version is that a 6 ft 9 in man in his forties who still plays 30 minutes a night does not weigh what he did at 18, has never pretended to, and has said more about the cost of maintaining his body than almost any athlete alive.
