Every few months the internet rediscovers that Julia Roberts has a daughter, and every few months the daughter in question does exactly nothing to encourage it. Hazel Moder turned 21 last November. She has no Instagram and a mother who told USA Today back in 2013, when the twins were nine, “We try to protect our kids. We just want to have our family life and not have that intruded upon.” Thirteen years later the policy holds. What has changed in 2026 is that Hazel is an adult who occasionally walks through a hotel lobby next to her mother, and that is enough for a week of headlines. Who she is, in facts rather than adjectives
Hazel Patricia Moder was born on November 28, 2004, in Los Angeles, a twin to her brother Phinnaeus. Their younger brother Henry came along in June 2007. The parents are Julia Roberts and Danny Moder, a cinematographer she met on the set of The Mexican in 2000 and married in July 2002. For a Hollywood marriage, 24 years is an outlier. For a Hollywood family that has managed to keep three children almost entirely out of the frame, it is close to a miracle.
I say almost. On November 28, 2025, Roberts posted a rare picture of the twins with the caption “These game changers, life alterers, ❤️expanders once were 1 and now are 21!” It was the kind of post she does once a year, if that, and E! News treated it like a state visit, which tells you how little else there is.
The one red carpet
The reason this page exists at all is July 2021. Hazel, then 16, walked the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival beside her father at the premiere of Flag Day, the Sean Penn film Danny Moder shot. She wore a long, simple white shirt dress, flat black shoes and no visible makeup, and the clips went everywhere. Entertainment Tonight’s video of it has been watched nearly two million times, which says more about the internet’s appetite than about the evening.
What the coverage tended to skip is the context: she was there for her dad, at his premiere, in a festival where a teenager on the carpet is routine. It was a family night out that happened to be photographed. Nothing about it suggested a launch, and five years on, nothing has followed. The only other screen credit is a child cameo in Mother’s Day (2016), alongside her mother, when she was 11.
What 2026 has looked like
This has been the most visible year of Hazel’s adult life, which is a low bar. On June 19 she joined her mother for Henry’s 19th birthday dinner at the Jane Hotel in New York, per Hola!, with Phinnaeus elsewhere. On July 25 the whole family, both parents and all three children, went to Sun Valley, Idaho, for the wedding of Julia’s niece Emma Roberts to actor Cody John, as Hello! reported. Two days later paparazzi caught Julia and Hazel walking near the Sun Valley Inn, both in black, and the headlines wrote themselves.
That is the full list. Two dinners and a wedding. I find it oddly reassuring. In a year when most 21-year-olds with famous parents are launching a skincare line, Hazel Moder’s public record is a birthday and a cousin’s wedding, and the family seems fine with that.
What her parents have said, and what they have not
Roberts has been consistent for two decades: the children are the point, and the children are private. On The Graham Norton Show in December 2023 she explained a stretch of fewer films with “Well, I was raising a family,” as if that settled it, which it did. Danny Moder’s Instagram, where most of the family photos live, is affectionate and vague on purpose; his May 2025 caption, “Mothers make the coolest stuff. Love these guys,” is about as specific as he gets.
What neither of them has said: what Hazel studies, where she lives, whether she wants anything to do with the industry that made her mother famous. Sites that claim to know are guessing, and so would I be. The honest answer is that a young woman from a very famous family has spent her first 21 years not being famous, which took effort from everyone involved. My read: that is the story, and it is a better one than the headline about footsteps.
